Amul Model Fascinates Ethiopia Image file 

Anand, Gujarat, India, Saturday, March 06, 2010 -- (Business Wire India)

Her Excellency, Gennet Zewide, Ambassador to Ethiopia in India and Hon’ble Mehreteab Mulugeta, Minister Counsellor, Economic and Business, New Delhi, visited Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation and Amul Dairy, Anand today. She had wide range of discussions on scope of cooperation in dairy development in Ethiopia and the constructive role that can be played by Amul.

Shri B. M. Vyas, MD, GCMMF mentioned that professional management combined with honest leadership, strong bondage between the milk producers and the professional and support by the government to the dairy cooperatives during the formative years are reasons for success of Amul. During the discussion, Her Excellency mentioned that she will plan the visit of a delegation headed by the Minister of Agriculture, Govt. of Ethiopia to see this highly relevant and developed cooperative model so that it could be emulated in that country.

In her concluding remark, Her Excellency, Gennet Zewide said,” I was impressed by the state of the art industry used by Amul Dairy. In fact I was fascinated by Amul, a cooperative movement changed the livelihood of the farmers especially of women. After visiting Amul I have developed the greatest respect for Dr. Kurien who single handedly created this cooperative that changed the lives of millions. Amul cooperative have to be replicated in developing countries like Ethiopia if we have to uplift the lives of downtrodden”.
