The announcement included the introduction of their fifth generation DIGIC 5 processor incorporated in the latest series of compact cameras, along with Wi-Fi sharing and HD video recording. The PowerShot range includes 7 new models – 5 PowerShot A series and 2 PowerShot SX series.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Alok Bharadwaj, Senior Vice President, Canon India said, "Canon's technologies are produced by high aspirations and challenging spirits of our engineers. We use constant innovation and new technology introductions to create new propositions that help in expanding rapidly and becoming both demanding and smarter. Canon's camera business today contributes about 45% to our total business and this contribution is expected to grow as consumption in the country increases with focus on inclusive growth. The cameras we have introduced today not just define our vision of the industry but are also a step to building a more resilient brand. Today we introduced the Wi-Fi capabilities of our cameras and video camcorders. With Wi-Fi functionality, our customers can now load pictures easily to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, iPad, iPhone and iPod touch and also to other Wi-Fi cameras of Canon."
HS System with new DIGIC 5 image processor
The HS system allows the user to take great pictures with accurate color reproduction even in low light and strong backlight situations. Beautiful shots can be captured with faster shutter speeds and advanced noise reduction in highlight and shadow areas.
Coupled with Canon's state of the art, DIGIC 5 image processor which was introduced in H2 2011, this image processor has further enhanced in its improved noise reduction and advanced white balance. Additionally, the processing power of the DIGIC 5 allows for multi-area white balancing, allows for more natural colors even with difficult lighting conditions. For example, when capturing scenes at night, glass structures are normally affected by mercury lamps, and reflect a greenish color – this is now prevented.
Canon HS system with DIGIC 5 is present in the PowerShot SX260 HS, SX240 HS, IXUS 510 HS and IXUS 240 HS and the recently launched IXUS 500HS and IXUS 125HS.
The IXUS 500 HS has the distinction of being the world's slimmest 12x optical zoom camera, providing users with the versatility to capture all kinds of photos, with the fifth generation DIGIC processor and enhanced shooting capabilities. The IXUS 125HS inside a slim, stylish metal body packs a host of helpful features - so taking great shots is a breeze, even in low light. Face ID prioritizes friends and Full HD movies add to the fun.
Wi-Fi – advanced Wi-Fi system allows convenient, real-time sharing of images
By utilizing the power of advanced Wi-Fi, the IXUS 510 HS and IXUS 240 HS allow users to quickly share their images on other devices such as laptops and smart phones, as well as on the Internet via YouTube, Facebook and email. Camera to camera connectivity is also supported via the advanced wireless function. Thus an image can be transferred from one IXUS to another IXUS for preview purposes. Additionally, images and videos can be selectively chosen to be uploaded via CiG (CANON iMAGE GATEWAY).
Advanced Face ID – the smartest Smart Auto yet
Face ID, available on the PowerShot SX260 HS, SX240 HS, IXUS 510 HS and IXUS 240 HS is perhaps the best gift that Canon has offered for capturing the best possible photos of your loved ones. Not only can select Canon cameras register face, name and age (birth date) information, but when shooting, the camera automatically finds the face even in a crowd of other faces and will adjust focus, brightness and other parameters accordingly to get the most beautiful shot. With Face ID, the number of recognizable scene modes has gone up to 58, from 32.
Face ID uses the age information to determine between babies, children and adults, and shooting is carried out with the appropriate settings for that age group. Face ID works especially well with baby photos and can detect a baby's smile to capture your little one in their best moments. And when your baby is asleep, via the appropriate mode, the intelligence built into Face ID will automatically adjust settings to not disturb the little ones sleep – neither flash nor focus assist lights will fire, and focus and shutter sounds remain off.
Shooting older children, who are always on the move, typically results in blurry images. In such cases, the camera will automatically take 3 successive frames so that the one with the least blur can be considered.
New Canon lenses – giving the sensor new eyes
With High Precision processing technologies and superior craftsmanship, Canon lenses are made to the most stringent norms. With precision grinding to the order of 0.001 mm, and polishing to the order of 1/10,000 mm, Canon lenses are aimed to give stunning optical results, while minimizing distortions. Anti-reflection coatings prevent light reflection and protect the surface of the lenses. Additionally, the ultra-compact designs allow for a previously unseen level of slimness, even with high zoom lenses. A good example is the PowerShot SX260 HS and SX240 HS that feature slimmer bodies that previous generation PowerShot models, with a more powerful 20x optical zoom.
Intelligent IS and Optical IS
Intelligent IS analyzes the camera movement to apply the best shake correction for shooting situation. For stills, the system automatically selects among Normal, Panning, Macro (Hybrid) and Tripod IS modes. For video, the system automatically selects among Dynamic, Powered, Macro and Tripod IS modes. With Intelligent IS, you can concentrate on image capture, letting the camera choose the most effective IS settings to assure the best possible image captured.
When using a tripod, simply turn on Tripod Mode, that disables IS. Dynamic IS is useful when shooting videos while walking – it helps reduce the shake that the footsteps introduce. Panning IS helps reduce blur that is vertical to camera movement.
Canon's Optical IS system has also seen a major change in the lens shifting mechanism. The ceramic ball roller is now 1.2mm in diameter, 0.4mm larger than before. Unlike the dual-axis system used by other systems, this system is more robust and more dynamic in terms of directional movement and is thus able to curb image shake more effectively. The PowerShot SX260 HS, SX240 HS, A4000IS, A3400 IS, A2400 IS, IXUS 510 HS and IXUS 240 HS support Intelligent IS and Optical IS.
Advanced Movie Shooting Functions
These days, capturing of videos in high definition is not only in vogue, but also fast becoming the norm. The ,b>PowerShot SX 260 HS, SX 240 HS, IXUS 510 HS and IXUS 240 HS support recording video at Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels).
Additionally, Fine Detail Movie Processing allows for enhanced resolution while faithfully reproducing textures in captured videos. Aliasing along diagonal textures is also smoothened, thanks to the ability to work with 4-times greater volume of data over previous models. Fine detail movie processing is available on the PowerShot SX260 HS and SX240 HS.
Advanced Touch Shutter
Touch Shutter is an innovative way to capture your favourite moments with a simple finger-touch. Simply touch the LCD screen wherever the subject is and the camera will focus there. Tap anywhere on the screen again to take the photo. The camera automatically focuses on the subject in case it moves, and there is no need to track the subject with your finger. Image capturing is thus hassle free and taking photos in this way becomes a fun-filled activity. Touch Shutter is supported on the PowerShot A3400IS and IXUS 510 HS and IXUS 240 HS.
Movie Digest is a unique and fun way to capture memories in both still and video. With Movie Digest, every time you take a picture, a four second movie will be automatically recorded just before the still shot is taken. The camera automatically edits these four second clips and creates a movie. Thus with Movie Digest, all captured events of a day can be enjoyed as movie as well. These movies can be recorded at HD 720p resolution (1280 x 720 pixels). Furthermore, using ImageBrowser EX, unwanted scenes can be deleted by manually selecting them. Thus you can create a movie around the scenes you want. Movie Digest is a feature supported by the PowerShot SX260 HS, SX240 HS, IXUS 510 HS and IXUS 240 HS.
Commenting on the new line up of technologically evolved products, Dr. Alok Bharadwaj further added, "We strongly feel that a camera must be a reflection of the one using it. All our products launched today have uniquely differentiated and relevant features that connect with our consumers. With new technologies and features we aim to enhance the photographic experience of our users indulging in the next level of photography."
