Hyatt Emphasizes Strong Commitment To Environmental Stewardship with Monsoon Initiatives

Hyatt Hotels in India Focus on Sustainable Water-related Initiatives as part of Global Hyatt Thrive Platform

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

At Hyatt, sustainability has been a key focus and the organisation is constantly looking for ways to tread more lightly on the planet and transform communities. Keeping in line with climatic changes and scarcity of resources, Hyatt is looking at contributing to the betterment of the environment with several water conservation initiatives during this monsoon period. The monsoon-focused initiatives are being undertaken at various Hyatt properties in India with the intention of using water judiciously to reduce the environmental impact of the hotels’ day-to-day operations.
Some of the most sought-after Hyatt properties in India have led the way by setting an example for others with their monsoon-focused initiatives.

  • Hyatt Regency Mumbai identified that the water level in the existing bore well was decreasing and was inadequate. To address this issue and to contribute to the organisational commitment of sustainability, the hotel initiated rain water harvesting. During the monsoons, the water that is collected on the terrace is routed through the storm water line to rain water bores. The initiative has resulted in higher groundwater levels throughout the year and the hotel receives approximately 33,000 liters of water annually for its domestic use. This also helps the hotel save a significant sum of 26 lakh rupees annually.
  • Grand Hyatt Mumbai has a rain water collection system that helps generate an average 10,000 KL of water; post-filtration this is used for domestic applications. The in-house Sewage Treatment Plant at Grand Hyatt Mumbai helps recycle domestic waste water which is later utilized for gardening and in the air conditioning plant. To conserve water, flow regulators have been installed in showers in all the guestrooms leading to minimum 20000 liters of water saving every day.
  • Park Hyatt Goa Resort & Spa has a closed swimming pool makeup water line to utilize rain water for makeup. Additionally, the rainwater that is collected or overflows in the hotel’s lagoons is utilized for groundwater recharging pits.
  • Hyatt Regency Chandigarh makes use of recycled water for irrigation and cooling towers. To conserve water, it also makes use of flow restrictors in guest room and public area taps.
Kurt Straub, Vice President of Operations for India, Hyatt Hotels and Resorts India commented, “At Hyatt, we understand that our actions can create long-term impact on the lives of the people and communities we touch. Our initiative to conserve water is a part of our long-term strategic approach towards environmental sustainability. As a responsible corporate citizen, we believe that conserving natural resources is of utmost importance to adhere to responsible business practices.”
“We are a purpose-driven company and this means that we care for our people so that they can be their best. Our purpose also defines our practices: We work to create an environment for people to thrive by building strong communities and fostering sustainable environmental practices. We aim to contribute towards the improvement of the local and global environments through Hyatt Thrive and Hyatt Earth. We believe our goal of becoming the world’s preferred hospitality brand depends on our ability to create shared value,” he added.
Hyatt's global corporate responsibility platform, Hyatt Thrive, helps improve local communities and environment worldwide. It is built on the understanding that Hyatt’s actions can create long-term value for the people and the communities where it operates, while also helping to protect the planet for future generations.
The sustainability practices at Hyatt are focused on improving energy and water conservation, waste reduction and recycling, sustainable purchasing, green communication and education for guests and associates, donations and volunteering time. Hyatt, which is already an industry leader for tracking comprehensive global energy and water data since 2006, is significantly expanding the scope of its existing sustainability initiatives and will continue to focus strongly on measuring and reporting progress. By embedding environmentally sustainable practices across businesses, Hyatt aims to use resources more thoughtfully, build more efficient and sustainable hotels, and inspire stakeholder action on environmental issues.
