Amway Opportunity Foundation partners Rajiv Gandhi Foundation
Village library programme established in Kerala

Kochi, Kerala, India

The Rajiv Gandhi Foundation's (RGF) acclaimed village library programme made its entry into the state of Kerala in association with Amway Opportunity Foundation (AOF). The partnership will see the starting of ten libraries in Wynaad district of Kerala. This will add to the existing number of 1065 libraries that RGF has established all over the country. Aimed to supplement ongoing adult literacy efforts, RGFs village library programme has been in operation since 1993. AOF is the social responsibility arm of Amway India, the largest direct selling company in the country.

AOF will support RGF in this venture for at least three years, after which the libraries are expected to sustain themselves. AOF has in the past supported programmes for the visually impaired persons under National Project for the Blind. This Project has made available Braille textbooks for blind children in seven states so far. This is the first time they are collaborating with RGF on a pilot basis. If successful, the programme is likely to be expanded further.

One library each is being set up in ten villages of Wynaad district. Libraries will be provided with furniture, books and newspapers. Suitable training will be imparted to the village librarians and the supervisors to enable them to manage and mobilise resources and deal with the library systems effectively. A village library committee will be attached to every library to oversee the day to day functioning, encourage community participation, mobilise resources and carry out membership drives. The library members will be charged a nominal fee per month. The libraries are expected to be self-sustaining after the financial support provided for three years. It is hoped that the libraries will be developed as information centres and a platform for other related developmental activities of the village.
