The US India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) has released a whitepaper, on the role of life course immunization as an intervention against Vaccine-Preventable Diseases (VPDs) and its importance in building a Resilient Health System. There is an increased focus on immunization, which is considered as one of the most cost-effective public health interventions
USISPF hosted an international symposium titled Life Course Immunization: Pulse of a Resilient Health System recently and presented the findings of the report. The symposium sought to explore how domestic, regional, and global life-course immunization strategies may be advanced with experts from various countries discussing their case studies, country-specific policies and the impact with the adoption of life-course immunization. The goal of the project was to emphasize the need for India to explore the opportunities and gaps in the optimal use of adult immunization
USISPF had previously organized a series of thematic roundtables to capture insights from experts on topics to complement the study. Topics focused on: vaccinating healthcare workers; health aging, immunization for the working population; strengthening healthcare delivery systems for non-pediatric Immunization and pregnant women and risks from cervical cancer, co-morbidities and immunocompromised adults and vector-borne diseases.
The key recommendations that have emerged from the report and symposium include: immunization is to be recognized as an integral part of healthcare policy planning and the rapid need to scale-up delivery infrastructure for adult immunization, with priority towards high risk individuals, increasing public-private partnerships, development of robust disease surveillance and a health communication strategy.
The international symposium saw eminent speakers from both the public, private sector and from academia. USISPF is hopeful that the recommendations captured in this report will help the Government of India and other stakeholders in the necessary measures required to adopt immunization as part of their programmatic and policy interventions.
